After being spotted by a Columbia talent scout, she was signed in 1942 and went on to star in a series of "B" films. She was then transformed into a platinum blonde pin-up after signing with Republic Studios, appearing in films such as Bells of Rosarita (1945) and Sands of Iwo Jima (1949). After her film career waned in the early 1950s, she moved into TV and was featured in a number of guest spots. She eventually settled down to raise a family after her marriage to TV mogul Roy Huggins, with whom she had three sons. Huggins died in 2002.

Mara and Leslie Brooks played the sisters of Rita Hayworth's character in the Fred Astaire film You Were Never Lovelier. In the film Alias Boston Blackie (1942), she plays the leading female role as the sister of an escaped and wrongfully accused convict.

1957

Mara was married to screenwriter/series creator/producer/novelist Roy Huggins and appeared as the leading lady in three episodes of his 1957 television series Maverick, including "Seed of Deception" with James Garner and Jack Kelly in the first season, "The Spanish Dancer" with Kelly and Richard Long in the second season, and "The Marquessa" with Kelly in the third season, after Huggins had left the series.

1958

In 1958, Mara played Maria Costa in the Bat Masterson episode "Double Showdown", with Gene Barry and Jean Willes. In 1961, Mara appeared as a nurse with Cesar Romero on CBS's The Red Skelton Show in a Sketch titled "Deadeye and The Alamo". About this time, she guest-starred on the NBC Western series, The Tall Man with Barry Sullivan and Clu Gulager as well as three episodes of Maverick.
