German dancer, actress, and writer best known for her frequent film appearances during the era of the Weimar Republic in Germany. She was also known for being the subject of a widely spread painting by German artist Otto Dix, titled Portrait of the Dancer Anita Berber. She died at the age of just 29, after contracting tuberculosis.
She studied dance at the school of Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, and then went on to study specifically ballet with Rita Sacchetto in Berlin.
Her drug and alcohol addictions, bisexuality, and preference for artistic nudity caused quite a lot of gossip among her peers in the 1920's.
Her parents were Felix and Lucie Berber. She first married a man named Eberhard Phillipp Engelhard von Nathusins before leaving him for a woman named Susi Wanowski. Next, she married a poet named Sebastian Droste. Her third marriage was to an American named Henri Châtin Hofmann.
