She grew up in a working-class town. She traveled to London, where she worked as an au pair. Later she studied education and literature at the University of Rouen and the University of Bordeaux.

Her parents, Blanche and Alphonse Duchesne, ran a cafe. She married Philippe Ernaux, and the couple had two sons before they divorced.
