After receiving his degrees, he joined Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and continued his research work with Bergström. He was able to describe the molecular structure of prostaglandins and show that the compound is derived from arachidonic acid. He also identified endoperoxides, thromboxanes and leukotrienes, and showed how arachidonic acid combines with oxygen to form prostaglandins. In 2014, he was hailed as the founder of the research field Lipid Mediators.
