Artist, author, and animator whose abstract work has graced the covers of such magazines as The New York Times, The New Yorker, and National Geographic. His work has been featured in museums all over the world, and he has drawn live from such events as the Olympic Games in London and the New York City Marathon. Past clients include Hermés, Google, LAMY, and The Museum of Modern Art. He has authored several books, including Words, a visual dictionary for children.

He studied under Heinz Edelmann at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. After graduation in 1997, he moved from Germany to New York City. He began writing and illustrating the New York Times blog Abstract City in 2008. It was renamed Abstract Sunday in 2011 when the blog moved to The New York Times Magazine. In 2010, he was inducted into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame.
