A graduate of the University of Saarland, he worked for IVM in Mannheim where he got the idea for creating potential managerial standard software. Later in 1972, Hector and his partners, Hasso Plattner, Dietmar Hopp, Claus Wellenreuther and Klaus Tschira, started the software company SAP AG, known also as SAP-System Analysis and Program Development, in Walldorf. After its stock market launch, the software company has gradually grown and made Hector one of the wealthiest man in the world. In addition, Hector started up the North American market for SAP, but then, in 1997, he left the company selling his shares in 1996, after a quarrel with his partners.

Currently, he makes investments in start-up software, health and biotechnology companies. Being a trained mathematician, Hector has an honorary doctorate from University of Karlsruhe for his support of talented students in natural sciences, mathematics and technology fields by performing the so-called Hector seminars. Moreover, he donates a bulk of money through his charitable foundation to AIDS and cancer research as well as for historic preservation and art. Together with his wife, Hector gave over $600 million for the renovation of the city museum in Weinheim.
