Academy Award-winning Composer who wrote the scores for such classics as Victor Fleming's "Joan of Arc," "The Bishop's Wife," "Above and Beyond," "Between Heaven and Hell," and "The Adventures of Marco Polo," which was his first full-length film score.
Before Fame
He was a Cellist for the People's Symphony Orchestra. He was hired as a musician by Fox Studios after he moved to Hollywood in 1929. His earliest pictures included "Sunny Side Up" from 1929 and "Grand Canary" from 1934.
Trivia
He won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1947 for 1946's "The Best Years Of Our Lives," directed by william Wyler.
Family Life
His father was a Cellist. He followed suit, beginning to learn the cello when he was 13.
