The Mayor of Atlanta from 1962 to 1970, who helped usher in an era of desegregation in the city. While in office he ordered officials to remove all “white” and “colored” signs from facilities in city hall and he was also one of the only white southern politicians to testify before Congress on behalf of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Before Fame
He first became the CEO of the Ivan Allen Company in 1946, after his father stepped down from the position.
Trivia
His life inspired The Ivan Allen Prize for Social Courage, which is annually awarded at Georgia Tech University.

He married Louise Richardson in 1936. The couple had three sons: Ivan Allen III, Hugh Inman, and Beaumont.
