Jack Arnold was a renowned director, producer, and writer of 1950s science-fiction films. Born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1916, Arnold began his career as an actor in Broadway productions before serving in the US Army Signal Corps during World War II. After the war, he apprenticed under Robert J. Flaherty and began making short films and documentaries. His first foray into the science-fiction genre was the spooky It Came from Outer Space (1953). Arnold achieved his greatest cult popularity with Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) and its sequel Revenge of the Creature (1955). He also directed the classic The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), as well as Monster on the Campus (1958) and The Space Children (1958). Arnold also directed episodes of various TV shows, including Science Fiction Theatre (1955), Peter Gunn (1958), and The Bionic Woman (1976). He passed away in 1992 at the age of 75.
