Jay played Skip Lee in the film Cruising (1980).
He appeared in Criminal Minds, guest-starring as Detective Morrison of the Palm Beach Police Department who enlists the BAU's help in capturing a bomber in the episode, Won't Get Fooled Again. He also appeared in an episode of Friends. Acovono also starred in Guy Magar's independent mafia film, Lookin' Italian (1994) in which he played the part of Vincenzo 'Vinny' Pallazzo, a retired gangster who has to go back to the crime Business when his own nephew is mixed up in a gang war.
Jay also appeared in at least three episodes of The X-Files, first in "Demons" as Detective Joe Curtis (Season 4, 1997). Later, he portrayed Duffy Haskell in "Per Manum" and "Essence" (Season 8, 2001).
Acovone starred in various movies during the 2000s and also appeared in several television series including Beauty and the Beast and Hollywood Beat. He also appeared as Charles Kawalsky in seasons 1, 2, 3 and 8 of Stargate SG-1. He can be seen playing the officer pulling over the TX Terminator in Terminator 3.
