Before Fame
Her childhood experiences inspired her to write the book, Alabama: One Big Front Porch. She graduated from Huntingdon College in 1939 and subsequently became a reporter for both The Birmingham News and The Alabama Journal.

Family Life
She was born in Selma, Alabama, and she grew up in nearby Thomasville. Her cousin owned a newspaper called The Thomasville Times for which she began writing when she was just twelve years old.
