Notable for his participation in the Apollo 16 lunar mission; the STS-4 voyage of the Space Shuttle Columbia; and the STS-51-C flight of the Space Shuttle Discovery, this NASA astronaut was also originally on the Apollo 13 crew roster, but did not participate in this mission because of concerns that he had contracted measles.
Before Fame
After completing his B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering at Auburn University, he enlisted in the United States Navy and went on to train at Edwards Air Force Base's Air Force Aerospace Research Pilot School.
