Journalist known for the New Zealand version of 60 Minutes and the TV3 current affairs show Three 60. He has covered conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Gaza and East Timor. He reported on the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, the Japan earthquake and tsunami and the Christchurch earthquake in 2010 and 2011. He won the Qantas Television Award for TV Journalist of the Year in 2006.
He completed a journalism diploma from the New Zealand Broadcasting School at CPIT.
In 2011, he published a book titled Beyond the Front Line. In 2019, he was a contestant on the New Zealand version of Dancing with the Stars. He also appeared on the New Zealand version of The Masked Singer.
He married journalist Paula Penfold. They have two children named Ben and Maia. He had a Ngāti Kahungunu father and pākehā mother. He and his older brother never learned to speak Maori.
He worked with Hilary Barry as a 6pm newsreader.
