Minoru Chiaki was a Japanese character actor who was born on April 28, 1917 and graduated from the University of Chuo with degrees in economics and commerce. He began to study with the Shin-Tsukiji Gekidan in 1937 and served as director of the Bara-Za theatre company during the Second World War. Director Akira Kurosawa saw Chiaki in a stage production and advised him to enter films, casting him in many of his films. Chiaki was notable for his roles in 7 Vo Si (1954) and Kakushi toride no san akunin (1958). In 1975, he suffered a stroke but recovered and won the Japan Academy Award for Best Actor in Hana ichimonme (1985). He passed away in 1999, being the last survivor of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai title players.
