Banerjee was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. She is the only child of her parents. Her original name is Jhumjhum Banerjee. Director provat Roy renamed her in her début film, Duranta Prem(1993)

1994

Banerjee won the Miss Calcutta contest in 1994. She won many beauty contest before her acting career. She has appeared in 35 Bengali films with Prosenjit Chatterjee. She has also done several Odia films, mostly with Siddhanta Mahapatra. She was also in the Hindi film Sooryavansham with Amitabh Bachchan. Some of her South Indian co-actors are Upendra and Chiranjeevi.

2004

Banerjee was married to Odia actor Siddhanta Mahapatra. They divorced in 2004 at a family court in Cuttack and she subsequently left the Odia Film Industry. She is currently married to Probal Basu and has a son, named Pronil Basu.

2013

Apart from acting, Banerjee has also hosted the popular Bengali non-fiction TV show, Didi No. 1, which is aired on Zee Bangla on weekdays. On 5 April 2013 a fire broke out in the studio of Didi No. 1 at Tollygunge, and she fainted following a panic attack and was rushed to a city hospital (Aurobindo Seva Sadan) immediately.
