He received his early training as an actor in the theater at Butler University and then went to London to gain experience at The London Academy of Dramatic Art. He made his Broadway debut in 1942 and won the Critic's Circle Award as best supporting actor in "Life with Mother" in 1948-49. He made his film debut in "The Iron Mistress" in 1952 and went on to appear in many other films, including "3:10 to Yuma" (1957), "Underworld, USA" (1961), and "The Stone Killer" (1973). He also acted in 125 summer stock productions and 250 television shows. Emhardt was active in St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Santa Monica and gave a great deal of support to The Boy Scouts of America. He passed away in 1994 due to heart failure.

Emhardt studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He began his Broadway career in the 1930s as an understudy for the equally heavyset Sydney Greenstreet. Emhardt made his stage debut in The Pirate (1942). One of the founding members of the Actors Studio, Emhardt was a member of the cast of the original 1952 Broadway stage production of The Seven Year Itch. He won the Critics Circle Award for best supporting actor for his performance in Life with Mother in the 1948-1949 season.
