He attended a Christian high school and then at Government Polytechnic Institute, before studying law at Gordon College and Punjab University, where he graduated with his degree in 1973. He worked in Business commodity ventures and the silk industries, while being politically active. After that he attended Punjab University for his Master's degree in political science. He was voted into national assemblies starting in 1985.
