A British-born Essayist and Novelist, he won a Grammy award for his album notes for Frank Sinatra's recording, The Voice - The Columbia Years 1943-1952. His novel, Office Politics, was a 1967 finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction.

He grew up in England, as well as in the United States, and he attended Downside School in his youth. He later studied at Lincoln College, Oxford, where he earned his BA in 1954 and his MA in 1957.
