After graduating from Duke University, he pursued a career in acting, appearing in a number of war films, teen exploitation films, and Jerry Lewis comedies. He also had a successful career in television, appearing in westerns such as "Have Gun, Will Travel," "Rawhide," "Laramie," and "Gunsmoke." In later years, he took the lead in the apocalypse thrillers Image of the Beast (1980) and The Prodigal Planet (1983). He has been credited with nearly 200 movies and television shows, 17 stage productions, and 200 commercial and industrial films. In addition to his acting work, he has written and produced films, and has been active at autograph conventions. His sister Cissy Wellman has also established herself on stage, film, and TV.
