Japanese cell biologist known for his work on the subject of autophagy. He has worked for the University of Tokyo, the National Institute for Basic Biology, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. In 2016, he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries related to autophagy.
He did his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Tokyo. He also spent some time conducting research at Rockefeller University in New York in the 1970s.
